The Origins of Woodside Sanctuary

A graduate of Wits Business School in South Africa, Laurence Grigorov is now the director of Laurence Martin Developments in Johannesburg. Specializing in high-end property development and construction for over 11 years, the company also provides turnkey services for the industry, ranging from design and finance to zoning rights. Laurence Grigorov is also a philanthropist who supports the mission of the Woodside Sanctuary, a home for the intellectually disabled.

The Woodside Sanctuary strives to offer its residents the highest standards of care in a safe and appropriately stimulating environment. It was founded in 1955, when Vernon and Norah Veale found it unacceptable to place their handicapped child in an institution. Instead, the matron of the Woodside Maternity Home accepted the care of the child, along with others that were similarly afflicted. When the Woodside Maternity building was closed by the health department due to fire concerns, the Veales organized a committee and purchased the Herbert Baker House in nearby Auckland Park.

Over time, more space was needed as the babies grew, and in the late 1980s a new, large extension was opened. Thanks to Dr. W.A van Niekerk, the Minister of National Health and Population Development at the time, an additional 64 families could be accommodated, creating a place where children and adults with profound disabilities could be cared for.
